 📘 Narration Change in English Grammar (Direct & Indirect Speech) – Notes for Competitive Exams

Narration বা Speech হলো এমন একটি নিয়ম যার মাধ্যমে কারও বলা কথা দুইভাবে প্রকাশ করা যায় –

1. Direct Speech → বক্তার কথা যেভাবে বলা হয়েছিল ঠিক সেভাবে উদ্ধৃতি চিহ্নের মধ্যে লেখা হয়।

2. Indirect Speech → বক্তার কথা নিজস্ব ভাষায় অর্থ ঠিক রেখে প্রকাশ করা হয়।

প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষায় (WBCS, SSC, Railway, Banking, UPSC, TET ইত্যাদি) Direct → Indirect Speech পরিবর্তনের নিয়ম থেকে নিয়মিত প্রশ্ন আসে।

🔹 Direct Speech

👉 যখন বক্তার কথাগুলি হুবহু লিখি।

📌 Example: He said, “I am reading a book.”

🔹 Indirect Speech

👉 যখন বক্তার কথাগুলি নিজের ভাষায় লিখি।

📌 Example: He said that he was reading a book.

🔹 Basic Rules of Narration Change

1. Reporting Verb (say, tell, ask ইত্যাদি) অনুযায়ী বাক্যের ধরন বদলাবে।

2. Tense Change 👉 Reporting Verb Past হলে Direct Speech-এর Tense এক ধাপ পিছিয়ে যাবে।

Present → Past

Past Indefinite → Past Perfect

Will → Would, Shall → Should, May → Might, Can → Could

3. Pronoun Change 👉 Subject ও Object অনুযায়ী Pronoun পরিবর্তন হয়।

I → He/She, We → They, You → I/We/They (Context অনুযায়ী)।

4. Time & Place Words Change

Now → Then

Today → That day

Tomorrow → Next day

Yesterday → Previous day

Here → There

🔹 Examples of Narration Change

✅ Assertive Sentence (বর্ণনামূলক বাক্য)

Direct: He said, “I am happy.”

Indirect: He said that he was happy.

✅ Interrogative Sentence (প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য)

Direct: She said, “Where do you live?”

Indirect: She asked me where I lived.

Direct: He said, “Are you ready?”

Indirect: He asked if I was ready.

✅ Imperative Sentence (আদেশ/অনুরোধ)

Direct: He said, “Open the door.”

Indirect: He ordered to open the door.

Direct: She said, “Please help me.”

Indirect: She requested me to help her.

✅ Exclamatory Sentence (আবেগসূচক)

Direct: He said, “What a beautiful flower it is!”

Indirect: He exclaimed that it was a very beautiful flower.

Narration Change Competitive Exams-এ সবসময় আসে।

Assertive & Interrogative Sentence সবচেয়ে বেশি জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়।

Reporting Verb Past হলে Tense Change হওয়া বাধ্যতামূলক।
